Group coordinator and main point of contact. Director of K-Now Ltd.
My research work spans a spectrum of areas, from Web technologies, to Web Technologies, Human Language Technologies, to Knowledge Management and Collective Intelligence.
Main focus is currently the study on how collective intelligence can be used to gather information and knowledge. In particular I work on the use of social media to empower citizens and institutions to share information during emergencies (WeSenseIt, TRIDS, RAnDMS and WeKnowIt projects).

Lecturer
My research interests are the personalisation of models using computational imaging and modelling techniques, the composition of scientific workflows, and the use and development of data-driven decision-making strategies to support clinical decisions using heterogeneous data sources such as personalised VPH (Virtual Physiological Human) models, clinical databases, and mobile sensors capturing a wide variety of variables describing an individual and his/her environment. My primary area of interest is in the cardiovascular domain with an emphasis in clinical translation.
I am also member of the INSIGNEO institute for in silico Modelling and CATCH – Centre for Assistive Technology and Connected Healthcare.

Senior Research Fellow in Human Computer Interaction for
Social Media and Knowledge Management.
My research focuses on the use of Social Media for Emergency Response, wioth a particular interest for how users interact with Social Media and which visualisation techniques can be applied to facilitate the interaction. I am currently the coordinator of the Randms Project (project funded by EPSRC on the usage of social media for national security) and I was coordinator of the TRIDS Project (Tracking Real-time Intelligent Data Streams, a project funded by UK/SBRI/Instinct on the usage of social media for national security) and of the WeKnowIt European Project (http://www.weknowit.eu) for Sheffield activity.

Researcher on Large Scale Data and Information Normalisation and Integration
Research Interests:My research interests can broadly include Natural Language Processing, Linked Data, Information Extraction, Ontology Engineering, Data Fusion and Enterprise Knowledge Management.
Neil Neil Ireson

Researcher on Information Extraction from Text
Generally my interests can be summed up as determining how to create a sentient being…. obviously in addition to the more usual approach. More specifically my research has focused on the use of Machine Learning for Knowledge Acquisition. Initially this involved the use of Evolutionary Algorithms for Data Mining and Process control where the knowledge is continually adapted to track changes in dynamic environments.

Researching Human Computer Interaction and Information Visualisation
I am a Research Associate at the OAK (Organizations, Information and Knowledge) group in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Sheffield. My research involves data and visual analytic techniques to analyse large volumes of dynamic data in near real time for Decision Support, Knowledge Management and Emergency Response applications.
